At the moment travelling outside of the UK isn’t exactly the safest (or easiest) thing to do. But I’m sure we can all admit that we could do with a break. And there are so many staycation spots you can enjoy by jumping in a car, or onto a train. Exploring more of the UK has always been on my wishlist but there’s so much more to explore. Here are some of the top staycation spots in the UK with a mix of ones I’ve visited and one’s on my own bucket list.
The Isle of Wight
I headed to the Isle of Wight a few years back after itching to go for ages. You can drive down to Southampton and get a ferry over to the island for a lovely weekend stay. There’s beautiful scenery and some British Heritage Sites to explore. Plus as you get on a boat it feels more like a trip away than just driving. You can drive the whole island in a few hours so it’s a manageable trip to fit loads in. One year when festivals are back I’d love to go to Bestival or the Isle of Wight Festival.
Staycation spots: Bath
Bath has been on mine and Luke’s bucket list since we first got together but it’s a trip we’ve not yet taken. I’ve been to Bath once for the Christmas Markets but it was busy and cold so we didn’t get to explore much. I’d love to head back in the Spring or Autumn time and go to the Roman Baths and see more of the city. Plus we could do a stop off at Stonehenge on the way back as I’ve not been in ages.
Edinburgh
Even though you’d usually hop on a plane to go to Edinburgh you can head there via train or drive. I’ve been to Edinburgh four times now and love it more and more every time. It’s always going to hold a special place in my heart as it’s where Luke proposed to me earlier this year. There’s so much you can do in the city from museums and monuments to the iconic castle.
Staycation spots: Cornwall
To me Cornwall feels like it’s incredibly far away as the drive is quite long from me. But it’s one of those places that would be great for a longer 5+ day trip. The beaches look absolutely stunning, although during this heat it’s probably heaving. I’d love to head to The Isles of Scilly as it looks like a tropical country and is just outside of Penzance. Plus it’s a great excuse to eat Cornish Ice Cream and a traditional cornish pasty.
Bristol
My final top staycation spot is another city-based one which is Bristol. I had a whole day trip planned for last summer but sadly the marathon got in our way so we diverted but I’m keen to head back and explore. I’m a big zoo fan and Bristol Zoo is meant to be fantastic. Plus Luke’s friend lives in Bristol so I can drop Luke off there and spend the day on a solo treat.
