Why We’d Love to Build A Garden Room

*This is a collaborative post on why we’d love to build a garden room

We bought our home at the start of 2020, and have no intentions to move in the near, or even longer-term future. But if we did it would only be because we need the extra room. Perhaps if we had kids. But with house prices at a high, it could be easier to create a garden room in your home to generate extra space than moving.

We have two additional bedrooms after our main one and these are used as a spare bedroom/ gym/photo-taking area/ Luke’s current office. And this is on top of my office. So the space is trying to do a lot of things. And if we ever had kids those things would have to go and a garden room could be just what we need.

A home gym as a garden room

For me, the main reason I’d love a garden room is to have a proper home gym. I have a Peloton bike in our second bedroom at the moment, but there’s not a lot of space around it. So if I want to do strength or cardio classes I have to come into the living room and kick the cats out.

I would love to have a space where all of my equipment is together and there’s space to do back-to-back workouts without having to move. Plus I’d love to get a treadmill so I could do Peloton walking/ running classes. And it would be amazing to have an actual weight rack and not have them laying on the floor pushed under a cabinet.

So if we created a garden room this would be my number one want for it.

A garden room as a home office

I am incredibly lucky to have a home office in our house which I love. But if we had kids there may come a time where we need that space to be used as a playroom or space for them to do homework when they’re older. So a garden room could be used as my home office.

I like the idea of a home office being outside of the main house as it does separate work and leisure completely. Plus I’d be less likely to run to the fridge or kitchen cabinets for a snack.

A workshop

Luke is a handy person and loves creating things and doing DIY’s and he would absolutely love a proper workshop. We’re currently doing a garage renovation which will take our actual garage space to 25% of what it currently is. So there will be no space for bigger work, but a garden room would solve that.

Luke really wants to get into woodworking so I think initially he’d want to use the space for that. But I’m sure it would also be for working on all types of hands-on projects.

Other uses for a garden room

There are so many other things you can use a garden room for including:

  • Guest accommodation – we could move a spare bedroom outside with its own en-suite
  • Leisure/ games space – if you wanted some isolated leisure space you could have a games room or a cinema space
  • Studio space – if you’re creative, a garden room would be a great space to work in
  • Treatment space – if you do hair/ nails/ massages etc you could have a dedicated treatment space that is outside of your main home

What would you use a garden room for?
