Copenhagen is a city I am very attached to. I ended up visiting three times within the space of a year as I fell in love with it. In general I’m a huge fan of Scandi countries but there’s something about Copenhagen which really calls out to me. Maybe it’s due to it’s similarities to London, but smaller with friendler people. There’s so much to do in Copenhagen, and although we’re not able to travel at the moment if you do make a trip here are some things you need to do.
Explore Tivoli
One of my favourite things in Copenhagen is Tivoli. It’s said that Walt Disney took inspiration from Tivoli in order to build the Disneyland Parks which is pretty cool. Although just having an amusement park in the middle of a city is cool enough. If you’re into your rides there are some great rollercoasters and rides, you just buy a rides wristband when you enter as it works out much cheaper.
If you’re not that into rides the gardens themselves are pretty enough and they dress up so well for the seasons. I’ve been at both Halloween and Christmas and both were truly magical. There are light shows and events, market stalls and so much more to explore.
Visit the little mermaid in Copenhagen
Fairytale main man Hans Christian Anderson came from Copenhagen so the fairy tale themes run throughout. There’s a statue of The Little Mermaid on the coastline of thr city and it’s a lovely walk to view it. You pass plenty of other statues along the way, and they’re just as impressive. I’d recommend going pretty early to visit though as she’s not a big statue and it can get quite crowded.
Visit Northern Europe’s Largest Aquarium
Did you know that the largest aquarium in Northern Europe is located in Copenhagen? I didn’t before heading to the city but Den Bla Planet is well worth a visit as there’s so much to see. One of my favourites was the big pengiun enclosure outside. Plus if you go in the summertime there are some lovely outdoor seating areas surrounded by water so you can take a picnic lunch with you and sit.
Explore Christiania in Copenhagen
Freetown Christiania is such a unique space located in the city. Although it keeps itself quite seperate from the rest of Copenhagen. The small area is a green and car-free neighbourhood which was established in the 70’s by people who didn’t want to live by everyone elses rules. People live in the area and it’s a mixture of houses, organic cafes, workshops, art galleries and so much more. One of the things I love most about the space was the mass of artwork everywhere you look.
Other top things to do in Copenhagen:
- Visit the zoo
- View the city from the top of the Rundetaarn Tower
- Climb the tower in Christiania (although beware it’s very steep!)
- Explore the Hans Christian Anderson museum
- Drink some Carlsberg at their factory
- Journey through space at the planetarium
